Authoritarianism – Constitutional Perspectives

Constitutions of autocracies are by no means trivial matters. To move beyond considering them merely as façades or shams, the four basic elements of authoritarianism – executive-informal techniques of governing, political power as property, participation as complicity, cult of immediacy and imaginary communality – are linked to the (internal and external) audiences and (instrumental and symbolic) purposes of authoritarian constitutions in order to define their relationship to each other and characteriostics more precisely. Constitutions are discussed as manuals of governing, symbolic politics, identity cards and/or showcases.
