Constitutional Erosion in Brazil (English)
In the last decade or so, the decline in the quality and quantity of democracies raises concern around the world. Instead of ruptures, academics notice a predilection for gradual methods of degradation of norms and institutions, with ambiguous phases, that only show their real danger when combined. This panel aims at debating Brazil‘s erosion, which is underway at least since 2013. The debates include the protests known as “Jornadas de Junho“, comprehends the contestation of 2014 presidential election, Dilma‘s Rousseff impeachment with no crime of responsibility, an increase of illiberal norms and measures, the militarization of politics, the judiciary‘s role in political events as the candidacy of former president Lula in 2018 elections, Bolsonaro‘s Government and even the COVID-19 pandemic.
