The separation of powers in political theory and social discourse: conceptual and methodological challenges

This panel will discuss the place and potential of the separation of powers in political theory and in social discourse. The papers presented will consider the relationship between traditional and more radical interpretations of the doctrine – the implications of these different understandings for normative understandings of constitutional democracy – and the role which these narratives may have in framing social understandings of inter-institutional relationships. Building on this theoretical discussion, the panel will also examine and critique potential methodologies for investigating and evaluating the effect of constitutional norms and narratives on institutional power.
